A New Week & New Adventures

DSCF1597As we start a new week there is so much we would like to share about this week’s exciting events, but also discuss some of last week’s magic.

First, I hope you have highlighted the date of Friday, January 30 at 2:00 o’clock on your calendar for our annual Van Allen Super Bowl reading party. All you need to bring is something to sit on, a little something to eat and drink, and something to read. We understand that some parents may not be able to attend, as work sometimes interferes with our plans, and if you are unable to attend please let your child’s teacher know, and we will try to make some arrangements so your child “grouped” with another adult.

This past week, we conducted a mini survey with our school team to learn how many PRIDE tickets were distributed to our students during the week. It was amazing to learn that over 700 PRIDE tickets were distributed during the week to students who displayed positive behavior or success with learning tasks. The Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) offers adults and students the opportunity to balance the good, which happens every day with the behavior requiring consequences. We all know each person would prefer to be acknowledged for the positive rather than identified for the negative, and PBIS is our learning tool to guide students to make the right choice at the right time.

Every afternoon at 2:30, our students are provided a unique opportunity based on their learning needs. Every student is placed in a leaning team, matched to their literacy need. We do appreciate parents planning ahead to make doctor’s appointments, so the student is at school and in attendance rather her team musing a school day due to a medical appointment.

The concern we are facing is that our dedicated parents are scheduling doctors before the end of the day and need to remove their child before the final bell rings. We are heavily engaged in or MTSS learning time, and removing a child from school between 2:30 and 3:00 impacts his/her learning, and the team which he/she belongs. When possible, as it best for your child’s learning, if parents could wait until the end of the day for pick-up, or least until after 3:05, this would be great.

Thank you for all your support and best wishes,
