Message from our Nurse

Spring is getting closer every day!!!  However, while we are waiting for it to arrive, we are focusing on ways we can keep our bodies healthy.  I am in the process of visiting each classroom from Junior Kindergarten to 3rd grade, discussing this topic and completing various related activities based on each grade level.  However, the general message remains the same.

To help keep our body healthy we can follow these guidelines:

Hand washing.  Germs are everywhere!  We should wash our hands after using the bathroom, after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose, after playDSCF1837ing outside, after playing with our pets and before we eat.

We practice washing our hands using these steps:

Turn on the water, and place soap in our hand

Scrub all areas of our hands (palms, tops, under fingernails, and wrists) for 20 seconds.  (This is how long it takes to sing the “ABC Song” once or “Happy Birthday” twice.)

Rinse our hands with water.

Dry our hands with a paper towel and turn off the water faucet using the towel.  DSCF1844

Taking a bath or shower every 1-2 days and changing into clean clothes every day.

Getting plenty of sleep every night.

Eating healthy foods and exercise.  All of the students do a very nice job of identifying foods that are good for our body and those foods/drinks that we should

only have occasionally.

Taking care of our teeth.  Once our permanent teeth come in, we won’t get any

more!

We take care of our teeth by:

  1. Brushing our teeth for two minutes at least twice per day; in the morning and before bedtime at night.
  2. Flossing at least once per day to clean areas between our teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach.
  3. Visiting a dentist twice per year.

I am having fun talking with each class!  The students are very energetic and have wonderful ideas about taking care of themselves.  Please contact me if you have any health questions or concerns for your child.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Striegel, RN, BSN
