The elementary art curriculum is based on the elements of design, which are line, shape, color, form, value, texture, and space. We start the school year, in all grades, with art projects emphasizing line. Each grade works with different types of line and directions of line. By fifth grade the students are required to be able to identify 5 basic line types and be able to draw them. They also have to know the three directions of line: horizontal, vertical, and diagonal. The photos show a sampling of different art projects we are currently doing or have just completed with line. Next we will move into shape.
