Third graders are starting to focus on reading initiatives this month. Reading at school and home is so important! Students need reading in order to master most other subjects.
Third grade is starting Book It and MTSS this week. Book it will last for the next six months. Students will have a realistic reading goal for each of these months. Learning to enjoy books outside of the school setting helps students become lifelong readers, however, our
students still benefit greatly from being read to. A third graders listening comprehension level is higher than their own reading level. Book It minutes can be earned from a child reading alone, on a book at their level, or minutes that your child reads aloud to you. Any minutes where you and your child take turns reading will also count toward their monthly goal.
MTSS is a 30 minute reading time of the day where students are working on the skills that each child needs the most. Some students need phonics, while others need help with fluency, and some students are working on deeper comprehension. The third grade fluency goal is to read 130 words per minute by the end of the year.
