To restart after our wonderful Thanksgiving break, here are a few highlights to add to your family’s calendar.
First, Saturday, December 5 starting at 8 AM in the Van Allen gym our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is organizing Kids’ Christmas starting at 8 AM. This event provides elementary students a guided (by elves) shopping experience to complete their holiday shopping at one stop, with an array of reasonably priced gifts, which are also tagged and wrapped.
Second, the Van Allen Choir and Band will be performing on Monday, December 7 starting at 7 PM in the high school gymnasium.
Third, the Van Allen/Salem Pack the Gym Night is scheduled for Friday, December 18. The Mount Pleasant High School girl’s varsity game commences at approximately 7:45. We would encourage all of our student’s to attend, as students will be singing the national anthem before the game starts, and a variety of prizes will be raffled. Many years, we have more prizes than we have students!!
And a slight change in direction, as we will start our Measures of Academic Progress testing (MAPS) for grades 2-5 before we leave for winter break. The early date for MAPS testing lessens the amount of testing students will need to complete during the January February window when students complete the Iowa Basic Skills testing and FAST testing in January
Finally, Tuesday at lunchtime, Van Allen students were introduced to this year’s magazine sale project, Time for Reading
And the question, which is sometimes asked, “Is this another fundraising project?” The answer is not a simple yes or no. This project offers two significant goals. First, parents are requested to consider purchasing a children’s magazine to support your child’s literacy development. We consistently view the research stating that students with access to a rich home reading environment develop stronger reader skills. This magazine sale project’s primary focus is to encourage your child to develop a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.
And yes, Van Allen will earn funds through from sale of magazines, but these funds are directed to our library to support the acquisition of books to create a richer reading environment.
When the parents arrive home on Tuesday, please spend a few moments to review the Time for Reading information packet, which should be found your child’s Take-Home folder.
Kindly note that the magazine sales are solely directed for the students’ family, as this is not a door-to-door sales campaign.
