Students have begun working on breaking words into syllables. We are using whale talk, syllable stomps, syllable boards, and underling the vowels. Chunking the words into syllables is helping the students in reading and writing multisyllabic words. Students’ confidence in reading grows as they begin to realize that big words are made up of two or more syllables. Students are taught to look at the individual syllables instead of trying to tackle the whole word. We are now reading words like gingerbread, plastic, paragraph, and instrument. Very exciting to see the students get excited about reading!
