What’s Up in Grade 5 Literacy?

dictionaryThe fifth grade students have been reading the book, “The Sign of the Beaver” by Elizabeth George Speare, which is historical fiction. This book tells the story of Matt who is left in charge to watch over the new homestead while his father travels back to Maine to get the family. Matt has to learn to survive on his own and also experiences lots of struggles.

Students read and discuss a chapter a daily, record the story elements of (characters and setting), practice their summary writing, and also do wordsmith. Wordsmith is locating a word in the text, finding its correct definition, part of speech and then recording this information in their Reading Response Journals.20160921_131250

We have found that anytime that children read the actual book and not just a snippet they are more engaged and often times find authors or types of stories that they enjoy. The fifth grade will read a book from each genre throughout the school year.

As you can tell the students are hard at work recording information in their Reading Response Journals.
