On Wednesday, May 24th, the 5th graders at Van Allen got a chance to step back in time. On a field trip to Nauvoo, students were able to play games that pioneer kids would have played, as well as learn how they made things to survive. On the trip, they visited the blacksmith, bakery, brickyard and print shop. They had to opportunity to learn how much time and work it took to make brick, and got to bring home a souvenir brick. At the print shop, students learned how time consuming it was just to write a little article for the paper, let alone print the whole paper. At the end of the demonstration, they were a little grateful to have computers with spell check!
It was a tie for the favorite activity of the day between the wagon ride and pioneer pastimes. The wagon ride was enjoyed by all and the kids loved getting to pet the horses afterwards. Pioneer pastimes was a lot of fun, as they got to try activities that pioneer kids would have played. The stilts and bear races were the favorites, especially when the teachers got in on the action. Overall it was a great day that was enjoyed by all!
